“Generations” –Meetings between Young People and Holocaust Survivors

By Dor Le Dor organization founded by the Israeli academy of leadrship

Every generation should make sure that no survivor is lonely.

In Israel today there are 950,000 elderly citizens, including 50,000 Holocaust survivors who live alone. Our goal is make sure that each of these survivors has someone who visits weekly who they can be in touch with whenever they need assistance.

In Israel today there are 950,000 elderly citizens, including 50,000 Holocaust survivors who live alone. Our goal is make sure that each of these survivors has someone who visits weekly who they can be in touch with whenever they need assistance.
For the last 8 years, the Dor LeDor organization has connecting hundreds of young people with elderly people who live alone. Last year we began our pilot project aimed at helping Holocaust survivors and arranged for 100 volunteers in the Tel Aviv area to volunteer part time. Unfortunately, we were forced to suspend the project after our funding from an overseas foundation ended. We promised the survivors that we would not give up on them and with your help we can restart this important program!
With your financial support, we can provide training for volunteers that will prepare them for a long term personal relationship with a survivor. If we can raise 80,000 NIS we can reach our goal of matching our volunteers with 200 survivors by the end of 2016. Help us bring back this important project!

Dor Ledor organization is a social NGO founded in 2008, which aims at bridging the gap that has emerged over time between Israel's younger and older generations. Today, there are approximately 900,000 elderly persons in Israel, a third of which are defined as "solitary".
We believe that connecting the generations will be best achieved by personal and direct contact between young Israelis and their senior counterparts, and that both parties, and society as a whole, could greatly benefit from this encounter.

At Dor Ledor, we try to alleviate some of the solitude experienced by our senior citizens, with 3 main programs:
1. "Dorot" - A weekly meeting between a young volunteer and an elderly solitary person, in his home. The aim of the program is the creation of long-term social bonds.

2. "Help is on the way" –assisting elderly individuals with their daily needs. The project focuses on assisting solitary elderly persons with using computers, accompanying them to medical examinations and other appointments and needs, and helping with miner home improvements.

3. "Holiday Simcha" – events in Jewish holidays, which strengthen the generational bonds and allow more volunteers to take a meaningful role in the organization's activities.
