Ensuring that deafness is not a barrier to education, employment or daily life.

For over two decades The Institute for the Advancement of Deaf Persons has worked for the empowerment and independence of deaf and hard of hearing Israelis. Thanks to our wide range of innovative, education and rehabilitation programs thousands of deaf and hard of hearing Israelis have begun to be more fully included and integrated into society with better access to the services available to their hearing peers, though much remains to be done. Our staff of deaf, hard of hearing and hearing professionals sets a personal example of successful integration in the work force. Programs include:

“Student Services - Opening the Doors to Higher Education”- Meets the needs of the increasing numbers of deaf and hard of hearing Israelis who want to continue on to higher education. Services provided include sign language interpreters, computer-assisted note taking, educational and legal counselling, advocacy and lobbying for improved legislation.

Deaf Mentor Program, in which successful deaf college students and graduates work as role models, both in group settings and individually, with deaf children and youth who are at risk of abuse and who have never been exposed to positive, successful deaf role models.

Health Care Accessibility – Working to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing Israelis have equal and effective access to Health Care, both everyday and in emergencies. The pilot project in Tel HaShomer and Nahariya will use remote interpreting and transcribing services.

New Accessibility Center
Our new Accessibility Center will soon provide, for the first time in Israel, long distance (remote) interpreting and transcribing services via a combination of video and phone. The service can be used in emergencies and by appointment and is accessible on computers with internet and on smartphones, vastly improving the quality and availability of these services while reducing expenses.

Crisis Intervention Program: A multifaceted program to ease the strain and worries of deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and children during times of crisis.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Holocaust Survivors Speak Out: This program documents testimonies from Deaf and hard-of-hearing holocaust survivors and their children. The testimonies are used to create workshops which strengthens the Deaf commuiny’s Jewish identity and connection to Israeli history.

ISL Courses for educators, family members and the general public, both those close to deaf and hard of hearing individuals and those that are interested in this fascinating language. The teachers themselves are all deaf or hard of hearing and the position also provides them with a profession and employment.

Publications: Our publications include the first ever online Israeli Sign Language Dictionary. The dictionary includes over 2,500 signs and their translation into English, Hebrew, Arabic and Amharic as well as companion volumes, “Signs of Judaism”, in English and Hebrew, "Signs of Crisis" and "Science in Signs". For Hebrew speakers we published a Jewish holiday cookbook of recipes from deaf and hard of hearing women with pictures of relevant signs in Israeli Sign Language.
