About 15 years ago, we launched a unique social initiative aimed at addressing the need for support, guidance, and accompaniment for lone young individuals trying to integrate into Israeli society. We created a framework for this and called it “Ach Gadol” – “Big Brother.”
A “Big Brother” is a volunteer who was once a lone soldier themselves, completed military service, and uses their personal experience to provide tools to the lone soldier, helping them build resilience and capability. They assist with accessing information, realizing rights, bridging cultural gaps, and even offering emotional support during times when the lone soldier feels isolated.
We began with just 15 volunteers. Today, thanks to the organization, we are 500 volunteers supporting over 1,500 lone soldiers and preparing around 500 young people for enlistment each year. Our work has been recognized by various institutions:
The President’s Award in the “Social Cohesion” category, presented by the late Shimon Peres.
The Minister of Absorption Award from Sofa Landver – for groundbreaking work in the field of immigrant absorption, and more.
All "Ach Gadol" volunteers are former lone soldiers. Due to the ongoing war, 40% of our volunteers have been called up for reserve duty, and have been defending our home alongside active-duty lone soldiers for over a year now. They’ve paused their careers, studies, some have been injured, and tragically, 43 lone soldiers have been killed since October 7.
We will do everything we can to support them in their mission and to ensure they have a smooth return to normal life.
Ach Gadol is not a “what” – it’s a “who.”
The organization is certified with the Midot Seal of Effectiveness and Efficiency.
