Thousands of young adults in Israel lack family support. Young people from dysfunctional
or unsupportive (emotionally or financially) families, or those who have been placed in
out-of-home care, reach the age of 20-21 and find themselves without a framework, after
completing army or national service. In the absence of assistance and support, these
young adults face difficult odds in trying to achieve their potential and break out of the
circle of poverty in Israel. Making a donation now can make a real difference in their lives.
Lamerhav developed and refined a model of in depth, long-term “life-guiding” of Young
Adults Without Family Support, aged 20-30. The model emphasizes three main
components: prolonged intervention, integrative and coordinated guidance, and
comprehensive support. It is based on the introduction of a meaningful adult figure - the
life-guide (the ‘melaveh’ in Hebrew) - into the lives of these young adults, who provides
guidance and mentoring on a wide range of all-encompassing facets of life. As part of the
process, the ‘melaveh’ and the young adult develop a relationship based on trust and
security, building, together, a plan tailored to meet the young adult’s personal goals and
needs, that takes into account his/her past and current needs and challenges, and
personal mental resources. Eventually, the young adults will take responsibility for their
lives with a positive, independent, and interdependent world-view that includes a map for
achieving their personal, professional, emotional and social goals
