Residents fight against a garbage incinerator on the Nabi Daniel Ridge! Over the past few years, a plan to establish the first garbage incinerator in Israel has been progressing here, in the Nabi Daniel Ridge - north of Neve Daniel. The plan is to build one of the largest incinerators in the world and, as mentioned, the first in Israel. The incinerator will directly affect the following settlements: Efrat, Beitar Illit, Neve Daniel, Har Gilo, Sde Boaz, Elazar, Tzur Hadassah, Mevo Beitar, Alon Shvut and Rosh Tzurim. In addition, many settlements and the city of Jerusalem will suffer indirect damages from air pollution and traffic congestion. The incinerator is meant to solve a difficult problem that is expected in a few years - when the Almina landfill site, where garbage is dumped today will be filled, but we are sure that the proposed solution is a big problem that will cause irreparable damage to us residents of the area. The reasons for which we oppose the establishment of the incinerator are: 1. Environmental laws do not apply over the "green line", so enforcement will be impossible. (If the government wants to establish a first incinerator in Israel - let it be smaller and in an area where the enforcement capacity is maximum.) 2. The state is counting on the incinerator as the main solution to the garbage of hundreds of thousands of people and in addition it is supposed to supply electricity to tens of thousands of homes - it will not be possible to stop its operation after the work has started - even if it violates all environmental laws. 3. There are many studies that indicate severe air pollution near similar incinerators in Europe, leading to severe health problems. 4. Hundreds of garbage trucks will enter/exit the site and pollute the environment in such a central and sensitive area, where the traffic is already unbearable. 5. It is unacceptable to build a chimney 120 square meters high on the Nabi Daniel ridge - as no one would imagine doing it on the Mount Meiron ridge, for example. What will we do with the money we raise? 1. We will recruit a project manager who will continue the struggle in all the aspects; establish contact with environmental organizations, politicians, media, residents, organize demonstrations, etc. 2. We will print promotional materials 3. We will recruit professionals as needed such as: lawyers, video production, public relations, lobbyists, etc. The fight against the incinerator is the organization of the residents of the area. The Jerusalem Green Fund is aiding us with fundraising and advocacy services and is recognized in section 46a tax refunds so that you can get a tax refund for the contribution to the struggle.
