Preventing Chronic Illness Resulting from Tropical Diseases
By NALA
A Collaborative Effort by NALA and Laniado Hospital
Donors: 5
Intestinal parasites such as bilharzia and strongyloides pose significant health risks, including breathing difficulties, abdominal pain, intestinal problems and more. Data from Laniado Hospital reveals that over 65% of the tests from chronic patients among Ethiopian communities and asylum seekers return positive for either Schistosoma or Strongyloides.
The cause of these chronic illnesses often go undetected, with parasites remaining hidden in the bodies of these patients for years. With improper diagnosis, immunosuppressive treatment can exacerbate the condition, leading to severe complications and in extreme cases death. A partnership between NALA, Laniado Hospital, and the community seeks to address this issue.
Focusing on two main areas, the project aims to:
2. Raise awareness, making information about these diseases, including symptoms, testing, and treatment, accessible among Ethiopian communities and asylum seekers.
4. Raise awareness within the health system, ensuring proper direction and testing is provided, alongside the appropriate information, delivered in the appropriate manner.
