Like home away from home

Donors: 16

For over eight months now, residents of the south and north have been displaced from their homes. They are staying in hotels across the country, with worry about their homes, uncertainty, and a sense of impermanence accompanying them since October 7th. At the beginning of the war, many volunteers flooded the hotels. Now, eight months later, there has been a significant decline in activities and content. Those remaining in the hotels are primarily elderly people or families with young children whose partners are enlisted, making a move to a permanent residence unrealistic. The sense of community has been damaged, the situation in the north is worsening, and the feeling that the residents of the north and south have been forgotten is growing among the hotel residents. The "Women in Frame" Association, which promotes female filmmakers in Israel, has reached hundreds of evacuees since the beginning of the war, screening the best films in dozens of hotels. Along with offering refreshments, we organized movie nights for both adults and children – evenings of respite and a brief escape from the har  news. "Thank you for coming to us, it provided us with a break from the tension," "Thank you for not forgetting us," "Sitting together with everyone here makes us feel a bit like home," "I haven't laughed like this in a long time." These are just some of the responses we receive following our activities in the hotels. For many of us, watching a movie in the living room is a routine activity, but for the displaced residents, it is truly a lifeline. The shared movie-watching experience strengthens the sense of community, facilitates meaningful therapeutic conversations, and thanks to the unique nature of the cinematic medium, allows evacuees to express what is on their hearts. Some screenings are accompanied by discussions with the filmmakers, directors, and actors of the films, creating powerful and inspiring moments. For us, it may be just watching a movie, but for them, it creates a sense of home that they desperately need, strengthens their spirits, and above all, says: we have not forgotten you. We are here until you return home. We invite you to join us and help make the displaced residents from the south and north, scattered in hotels, feel at home away from home

On the last Israeli Cinema Day in 2024, 29 feature films were screened, and only 4 were directed by women – a mere 17%. The underrepresentation of women in Israeli cinema affects us all. "We can't be what we can't see." We, our daughters, and our girls need to see themselves on screen and feel th...
