Established in 2012, The Natural Step Israel is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing social and ecological sustainability. Our main focus is on enhancing the resilience of food systems to withstand environmental and social challenges and building the sustainability capacity of decision makers.
Our Impact and Initiatives
Since 2012, TNS Israel has been a pioneer in promoting food system resilience, reducing food waste, and positioning agriculture as a pillar of resilience. In response to the challenges posed by the Swords of Iron conflict, we launched the 'Israelis for Blue and White Agriculture' initiative to bridge the gap between agricultural production and consumption. This initiative aims to support farmers, elevate Israeli agriculture, ensure fair pricing for fresh produce, bolster food security in Israel, and enhance the resilience of the food system during crises.
Current Projects Needing Funding
We are seeking to promote two channels to support Israeli agriculture in crisis, by expanding their ability to sell produce directly. Both premises aim to strengthen food security and the resilience of the Israeli food system. We aim to assist Northern farmers grappling with supply sales issues due to the security situation, and continue supporting Southern farmers amidst ongoing conditions. Establishing a hired labor system is crucial.
1. Israelis for Blue and White Agriculture (IBWA)
IBWA began as an emergency response to the Swords of Iron crisis, relying on volunteers to assist struggling farmers. By partnering with over 200 farmers and local small food industry businesses, IBWA facilitated direct sales of tens of tons of produce and organized farmers' markets nationwide. This initiative:
Supported farmers' livelihoods.
Minimized produce wastage.
Expanded sales options.
Made local produce affordable, mitigating the high cost of living.
In general, the enterprise promoted public solidarity, acted as a sustainable model of excellence, put Israeli agriculture at the center and started developing communities around it.
2. Israelis for Blue and White Agriculture Marketplace
IBWA Marketplace represents our commitment to economic resilience through digitalization, training, and community development. In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, this project focuses on:
Building a community of local farmers.
Providing digital literacy skills.
Establishing digital platforms for selling fresh and processed agricultural produce.
Offering healthy, nutritious, and fresh produce at fair prices.
Empowering Local Agriculture and Food Security
Our sales platforms serve as communal spaces where farmers and citizens converge, fostering connections and appreciation for local food origins. What began as an emergency intervention has evolved, and we aim to establish it as a routine platform, uniting people around the shared value of local agriculture and 'blue-and-white' products. Our goal is to place agriculture and farmers at the center, ensuring food security and the resilience of the local food system in times of both war and peace.
