Israeli Hero Master Sergeant (Res.) Guy Shabtay
On October 26th, 2024, Master Sergeant (Res.) Guy Shabtay, 39, of Jerusalem was seriously wounded in a heroic battle against enemy forces in Southern Lebanon. Despite the doctors’ efforts and dedicated care, after an intense two-week battle for his life, during which he received 85 units of blood, Guy succumbed to his wounds on November 8th becoming the sixth fatality from the same battle.
He served in Battalion 8207, Alon Brigade (228), as a moral and spiritual advisor in a combat role, part of the military rabbinate. He specifically chose to serve in this role to strengthen the spirit of the unit's soldiers. Guy, known for his devotion and faith, was a close friend of the battalion rabbi, Captain (res.) Rabbi Avi Goldberg, and the two fought side by side until their last moments.
Guy grew up in a loving secular home in Ramat Gan. After completing his army service, Guy received a soccer scholarship to study at the University of Valparaiso. Through G-d’s guiding hand, Guy formed relationships in Indiana and Chicago that opened the world of Torah learning and observance to him. After several years, Guy returned to the ways of his fathers and became a fully observant Torah Jew. Not long after completing his studies, Guy returned to Israel and spent the next few years as a full time Yeshiva student.
Guy lived a life dictated by the highest values of Torah and Mussar and would begin each day studying Torah at Machon Meir and then he would go to Chorev Yeshiva high school in the afternoon where he was a beloved and dedicated Math and English teacher. The values he instilled in his students were evident in their reciprocal love and admiration. His love of Torah, along with his commitment to educating young Jewish teens, were cornerstones of his life.
Guy Shabtay’s funeral took place on November 8th at Har Hertzl military cemetery attended by family, friends and the Israeli public, who came to pay him their last respects. His legacy of devotion and love to G-d, Torah, and the Jewish nation, will continue to be a source of light to his wife, three daughters and students.
Throughout his life, Guy dedicated himself with love and joy to the Jewish people and in the end paid the ultimate sacrifice. We can now reciprocate some of that love to him and his family. Guy leaves behind his wife Reut and three young daughters, Gefen, 8, Halleli, 5, and Chana, 4, along with a family and community that lost a valued and beloved figure.
May his memory forever be a blessing.
