The Garden of Dan

By Torani Community Center - Nir Galim (R.A.)

Join us in creating a beautiful garden that will serve as a place of joy and memory, with thoughts of Dan, the values he grew up with and cherished, to remind us of togetherness, the love between people, the embrace, the music and singing that unites, and the love of nature.

Project: The smile and the hug are the two things that everyone who knew Dan remembers and misses. Twenty years have passed since that day when Dan, a fighter in the Paratroopers' Reconnaissance Battalion, was killed. Though 20 years have passed since that day, Dan is far from forgotten. He lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, and in the many lives he touched. His army friends, who continue to gather in his memory, keep his spirit alive — sharing stories, visiting his grave, and even bringing their families to Nir-Galim, as Dan would have done. His childhood friends, organize an annual celebration in his honor every year on his birthday. The tradition is one of music, laughter, and joy — just as Dan would have wanted it — with food and friends at Nitzanim Beach, an unforgettable night of shared memories and love. Dan’s family, too, has grown. With 11 nephews now in the picture, the love he gave is passed on to the next generation. Every holiday, every joyous occasion, and every quiet moment is filled with memories of Dan — remembered, honored, and cherished. Though he is no longer with us in body, Dan's spirit is alive in each of us. His love for life, his loyalty to his friends, and his unwavering commitment to his country continue to inspire and guide all who knew him. Dan, forever in our hearts. And especially now, in these challenging times, we decided to create a beautiful garden, a place of joy and remembrance, where we can think of him, of the values he cherished and grew up with. It will be a place to honor the togetherness that meant so much to him, the love we share for one another, and the warmth of a hug. It will remind us of the music and singing, where the individual is part of the whole, and of his love for nature — a love that lets everyone come together, sit, and find shade under its peaceful embrace. Garden Design: Attached is a visualization of the garden located in the heart of Nir Galim village, where round seating areas will be placed for shared picnics, benches for rest and a moment of nature and peace, or for gatherings and conversation. Beautiful Israeli vegetation will be planted, adding warmth and beauty from every direction. Drinking fountains, suitable lighting, and trash bins will be included. At the center of the garden, there will be a seating circle where children from the kindergarten or school, young and old alike, can gather – for a performance, a story, a discussion, a lecture, an activity, music, or simply a time of togetherness. The circle will serve as a stage, a center for play and performance, much like Dan loved, with an artistic sculpture of a guitar beside it, symbolizing both soul and joy. We envision this as a beautiful, functional, and joyful corner. A few words about Dan: Dan Telesnikov, born on August 17, 1984, in Ashdod, was the son of Ludmila Leah and Alexander. Though his parents came from a distant land, Dan was born in Israel, a true "sabra" — a native son of the soil, strong and rooted in the country he loved. When he was just four years old, his father Alexander passed away, leaving his mother to raise him and his older brother, Jan, on her own. Yet, despite the hardships, Ludmila’s love and resilience gave Dan a solid foundation. When Dan was nine, his mother remarried Maxim Amzaleg, and they moved to Moshav Nir-Galim, where they were warmly embraced by Maxim’s family. This new chapter brought new bonds, as Maxim became not just a stepfather but a true father figure to Dan, and Dan returned that love with all his heart. Dan found his place in Nir-Galim and at the Kibbutz Yavneh school, where he became known for his vibrant energy and his love for life. He was a part of a close-knit group of friends who shared everything — laughter, adventures, and music. Dan had an infectious joy about him, always ready to make people laugh, to be the center of attention, and to share in the happiness of those around him. With his bright green eyes and irresistible smile, he charmed everyone he met. In November 2002, Dan joined the Israeli Defense Forces and, despite the physical and emotional challenges, he found his strength. He served in the elite Paratroopers Brigade, where his bravery and determination set him apart. He faced and overcame countless obstacles, excelling in his training and becoming a leader. His commitment and discipline led him to a special course in combat terrorism, and within months, he completed his NCO course with distinction in Krav Maga. Dan’s dedication to his unit and to his country was unwavering. As a combat NCO, he was known for his toughness, his high standards, and his belief in the importance of fighting terror and defending the state. Though the work was demanding, Dan found solace in the bonds he formed — not just with his fellow soldiers, but also with his family and childhood friends. During his brief breaks from the army, Dan would return home to Nir-Galim, where his heart remained. He balanced his time between family, friends, and the memories of his youth, cherishing every moment with those he loved. On May 2, 2005, during a routine operation in the West Bank, Dan’s life was tragically cut short. He had been called away from his vacation and rushed back to his unit for a mission. In the midst of a search near Tulkarm, Dan's unit encountered resistance. It was in that battle that Dan was killed, just 21 years old. Dan was laid to rest in the Nir-Galim cemetery, surrounded by family and friends who mourned the loss of a bright soul, a beloved son, brother, friend, and soldier. For this to happen, we need your partnership. Help us honor Dan's memory. Together, we will continue the way Dan used to think and live. Together, we will keep Dan’s spirit alive and ensure that the values and love he cherished so deeply will continue to resonate. You are welcome to read about Dan through the eyes of the people who love him. Memorial website for Dan: Dan’s memorial website
