Brasachin: Excellence for Ethiopian-Israeli Youth
By Aim Up
Empowering and integrating the Ethiopian community in Israeli society
Donors: 4
It has been over 40 years since the start of the massive immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel (Operation Moses.) Over the years, the community has sacrificed --and continues to sacrifice-- much of its most precious capabilities for the sake of the Jewish people and the homeland. This commitment is the product of a vision: one that foresees that, after 2500 years of exile, the People of Israel will return to greatness, and the Ethiopian-Jewish community will constitute a central and essential part of the strength of the People.
This commitment has extracted a very high price from the Ethiopian Jews, and has been filled with numerous challenges.
- Over 90 percent of eligible members of the Ethiopian Jewish community serve in the IDF. The the percentage of conscripts in the general population is less than 75 percent.
- Unfortunately, in the Iron Swords War, some 5 percent of the fallen soldiers were sons and daughters of the Ethiopian-Jewish community in Israel, although they represent less than 1.5 percent of the general population.
- We are members of the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel who immigrated at a young age, faced the challenges of absorption and were able to do so (integrated into a variety of leading professions in the Israeli economy). We decided that the time has come to take responsibility for our future, the future of our children and the future of our community. And so, in 2023, we established the Brasachin nonprofit organization, through which we work to:
- Develop unique and tailored models for the integration of children from the community in excellence tracks in middle schools.
- Expose every Israeli child before they join the army to the heroic story of Ethiopian Jews. We believe that the results will be a reduction in racism in the public sphere and an expansion of the possibilities for the personal and social development of every child in Israel.
In the end, we aim to achieve an equal and inclusive society that accepts and encourages diversity, with the understanding that nurturing the person is the right basis for the strength of the people.
