What Is This Competition All About?The world’s largest robotics competition is run by a non-profit organization called FIRST, whose mission is to inspire youth in science and technology. The competition includes around 4,000 teams from all over the world and is supported by major global companies and institutions such as: NASA, Lockheed Martin, Google, Apple, Boeing, Motorola, General Motors, and more. “And Orbit beat them all! With far less funding and during a time of war – the team achieved incredible success.” Each year in early January, the new game rules are revealed. From that moment, teams have just six weeks to build a brand-new robot from scratch based on the new challenge. Students are divided into teams – design, strategy, construction, programming, and driving – and work daily until midnight. After that, the competition season begins in Israel. In its early years, the team wasn’t particularly outstanding. But in 2014, the team set a clear goal – to reach the global top. Through years of structured work, an evolving team charter, continuous improvement, and persistence – Orbit climbed to the top tier: Today, the team is consistently ranked among the top 5–10 teams in the world, and serves as an inspiration for many teams in Israel and abroad.
