Ending preventable deaths from colorectal cancer by 2030 in Israel
By SHAMIR - MEDICAL INFORMATION SERVICES LTD (CC)
Through early screening, we stop colorectal cancer before it starts — and stand by those who face it.

Colorectal cancer is, unfortunately, the second most common cancer in Israel. Every year, around 3,000 Israelis are diagnosed, and sadly, about 50% of them will die within five years — mainly due to late detection.
The most striking and heartbreaking fact is that in most cases, this cancer is preventable. Yes — entirely preventable. In its precancerous stage, it can be treated by simply removing a polyp during a colonoscopy. At the very least, early detection can improve survival chances dramatically — from just 10% in late-stage detection to over 90% when caught early.
“Zav Menia – Prevention and Support for Colorectal Cancer” has been active in Israel since 2003. Thankfully, in 2005, the Israeli Ministry of Health adopted a national colorectal cancer prevention program — not long after our work began — and we’re seeing results. While there's still a long way to go, there's been a steady decrease in late-stage diagnoses and a parallel increase in prevention and early detection.
According to cancer registry data and population growth estimates, we’ve managed to cut the rate of late diagnoses by half, and double the rate of early detection — a real, measurable success.
But we aim higher.
We envision a reality where, by 2030, no one in Israel dies needlessly from colorectal cancer.
How will we get there?
By increasing the number of people undergoing early screening tests, and leveraging advances in both screening technologies and treatment options.
We work across all sectors and communities in Israel, leading national awareness campaigns and creating tailored outreach to target audiences:
• “Don’t wait for symptoms – get screened in time” (starting at age 50)
•
Campaigns highlighting symptoms and encouraging younger people or those at risk to get tested promptly
•
Myth-busting efforts — e.g., 50% of patients are women, rising cases among young adults, and more
•
Campaigns in Arabic, tailored messaging for religious and traditional communities, Druze-specific outreach, and beyond.
In the past five years — and especially since October 7 — we have expanded our direct support for patients and survivors. We are committed to empowering those facing the disease and their families by:
•
Providing access to clear and updated information
•
Supporting rights navigation and logistics
•
Offering emotional and mental health support, individually and in groups
•
Being available 24/7 through our online platform
•
Sharing the latest research and science-backed recovery tools
We also offer supportive activities proven to improve outcomes: exercise, social connection, empowerment, and proactive involvement in treatment — all linked to increased survival and improved quality of life.
In addition, we are actively involved in policy work to promote systemic improvements in cancer care and patient rights.
The bottom line?
Supporting our work truly saves lives — and the numbers prove it.
