A Family Advocacy Organization Dedicated to Protecting and Advancing the Rights of People Living with Mental Health Challenges What would you do if someone you love experienced a severe mental health crisis—only to discover that the doors to care were shut? We, the volunteers of Ozma – The Association of Families for the Advancement of Mental Health, have learned the hard way that the phrase “It won’t happen to me” can shatter in an instant. As family members personally supporting loved ones through mental health challenges—while also volunteering to improve the mental health system—we deeply feel the pain of the severe gaps between needs and services. Mental health care in Israel suffers from major underfunding compared to physical health services and to international standards. These gaps have only grown since the COVID-19 pandemic and the October 7th tragedy, which led many more people into crisis. For nearly three decades, Ozma’s volunteers have been working—unpaid and without government funding—to bring real change. Over the years, we’ve played a central role in major milestones: • The enactment of the Rehabilitation Law • Securing government subsidies for rent for people in recovery • Establishing emergency mental health hotlines, and more.
