Post-trauma is no longer a silent epidemic, and it affects both humans and animals alike, with 67% of Israelis reporting mental health harm following the war, and the need for an acute response is only increasing.
The Wind Chimes' (Pa'amonei Ruach) association is a pioneer in the treatment of complex trauma using the unique Reciprocal Approach – a partnership between human patients and animals, leading to an 80% reduction in trauma symptoms and 98% treatment adherence. Now, as coping has reached new heights, your help is vital: Donate to Wind Chimes so we can expand the life-saving response and give hope to people and animals coping with post-trauma.Post-Trauma: An Open Wound Requiring Healing
With 67% of Israelis admitting their mental health has deteriorated in the last two years, post-trauma is no longer a fleeting condition threatening a specific population. Post-traumatic symptoms can appear years after the traumatic event or not at all. In some cases, the onset of symptoms can even be prevented. Whether it's complex post-trauma due to a prolonged traumatic event within a relationship or sexual trauma following a single sexual assault, those coping with post-traumatic symptoms are on the brink of an abyss. Trauma has long ceased to be a silent epidemic. It's here, now, in almost every home in Israel. It affects both humans and animals. It can be born from loss, violence, accident, or neglect, leaving an open wound that endangers lives. When there is no response, every day of waiting is a day where the pain deepens, hope fades, and another soul – human or animal– breaks.
Humans and Animals Affected by Trauma
Trauma does not distinguish between humans and animals, and both are forced to cope with its scars. The Wind Chimes Association (Israeli registered Amuta) is the last therapeutic resort for children, youth, and adults, some with cognitive disabilities, who have experienced complex trauma, risk, and distress. They come from the social periphery and difficult life circumstances that fuel the risk of developing post-traumatic symptoms. Most patients are adolescent girls and young women who have experienced complex and sexual trauma. The damage of post-traumatic symptoms is current and future: from flashbacks and anxiety attacks to difficulty integrating socially and occupationally and managing independent lives. During and following the recent war, the number of people seeking emergency treatment from Wind Chimes doubled – families of hostages, survivors of sexual assault, and new patients who experienced an exacerbation of their PTSD.
Contrary to popular belief, animals also experience post-traumatic symptoms just like humans – persistent anxiety, avoidance of touch, aggressive or frozen behavior, and impaired ability to form bonds. Adverse early experiences in animals can have a profound and lasting impact on their health, behavior, and resilience for years. The recognition that animals experience post-traumatic stress is not only a matter of compassion but also of ethics and a profound understanding of their consciousness.
This is where Wind Chimes's unique approach comes in: reciprocal therapy, where human patients who have experienced trauma – not only receive treatment with the help of animals but also take an active part in the healing of those animals. The partnership between humans and animals, founded on empathy, mutual responsibility, and trust-building, encourages both parties to work towards a better life.
A Unique Response: The Reciprocal Approach – A Partnership on Two and Four Legs
The Wind Chimes association is a pioneer in the treatment of complex, sexual, or prolonged trauma through the reciprocal approach. The reciprocal approach views animals as full partners in the therapeutic process. This approach allows those coping with PTSD to take an active and positive part in the animal's healing process. Especially for those who have experienced harm within a relationship, the opportunity to create a safe, reciprocal, and beneficial relationship is what allows recovery to begin. The unique therapy is provided by a professional team of certified therapists in psychology or clinical social work, who also have training in animal-assisted therapy.
The Wind Chimes treatment model proves itself with outstanding results:
• 98% of patients continue treatment beyond the first month.
• 80% of patients experienced a significant decrease in the frequency and intensity of trauma symptoms.
• 80% of patients showed a marked increase in Self-care skills.
In 2025, we provided treatment to 250 human patients and about 50 quadrupeds. The number of individuals coping with complex trauma has reached new heights: research by Israel's largest trauma treatment organization assesses that the cost of treating PTSD in Israel will surpass $154 million in the next five years. The need for an acute therapeutic response to the national emergency is clear.
The number of people coping with post-traumatic symptoms is constantly increasing while the number of existing solutions stagnates.
The Wind Chimes response has been proven effective and should be made available to more post-trauma sufferers.
Donate to Wind Chimes to help us continue providing life-saving assistance to humans and animals.
