Establishing HaShlama

Have you ever stopped to think about what the end of life journey looks like in Israel? The current reality is complex. At the end of life stage, many of us will find ourselves in overcrowded medical institutions, on long waiting lists for inpatient hospice, or at home, surrounded by a loving yet exhausted and helpless family. Israel is missing a space that allows for a farewell journey covering more than the medical aspect of dying. We lack a humane, embracing, and dignified parting-process. The Hashlama Association has been established out of a fundamental need to reshape the end of life experience in Israel. We present Beit Hashlama a new, first of its kind model in Israel. Beit Hashlama is a place where a person is no longer defined as a "patient," but rather as an entire being with a meaningful life story. Every person in Beit Hashlama holds the natural and basic right to complete their life journey with a sense of safety and dignity—through a process of closure ("Hashlama") for themselves and their loved ones. Why is this a necessity right now? A system at its limit: Hospitals are filled to capacity, and dedicated medical teams are facing extreme burnout. Families under stress: In their most sensitive and vulnerable moments, families are often left alone to cope with unbearable emotional and logistical challenges, treating their loved ones at home with no sufficient resources, time or knowledge to do so. A fundamental human right: Every individual, including those without a familial support system, deserves to reach the end of their life cared by a professional team in a supportive environment. Building the foundation We are currently laying the cornerstone and casting the organizational and strategic infrastructure in order to establish the Home at the highest professional standard.
