Keeping Yonatan’s Spirit Alive – Building the Yonatan Samo Hy”d Memorial Spring

We are Shevet Orot of Ezra Efrat North, and we are setting out to build a natural spring in Efrat in memory of Yonatan Samo Hy”d - a living place of nature, remembrance, friendship and connection to the Land of Israel. Yonatan, the eldest of the Samo family, grew up in Karmei Tzur. Gifted, curious, warm and deeply social, he was a Bnei Akiva counselor, a volunteer with Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services, an athlete, and above all, someone who loved exploring the Land of Israel. He knew its trails, loved its landscapes, and had dipped his feet in virtually every spring throughout Gush Etzion - the scenery of the home he loved. Yonatan enlisted in the Paratroopers Brigade, serving as a combat soldier and squad commander. On 10 November 2023, 26 Cheshvan 5784, he fell while defending Israel. Even in his final moments, Jonathan continued to give. Through his decision to donate his organs, he saved the lives of six people. Now we want to carry his spirit forward in a way that reflects who he was. The spring will be built in Efrat, where Yonatan attended high school, creating a place where families, young people, hikers and friends can gather, connect with nature and the Land of Israel, and encounter Yonatan's remarkable story. This will be more than a memorial. It will be a living place - just like the memory we want to preserve.
