“No country can, over time, be stronger than the fabric from which it is woven”. Israel’s tribal society is precariously balanced between the danger of fragmentation and the hope of accommodation. Informed by decades of experience, the author believes that a more precise understanding of the concept of “social cohesion” and the conditions conducive to its promotion is key to addressing this challenge in Israel and beyond. A re-assessment of Israel’s widely misunderstood society-building journey and democratic trajectory provides welcome hope for the future.
