The power of "otherness" is a lever for progress

Physical education is one of the primary arenas in which full inclusion is carried out at the school. All different types of students participate in physical education. They develop and express other talents and abilities in this arena than those developed and expressed when studying particular subjects in the classroom. By participating in physical education classes, students develop body and spatial awareness as well as relationships with others. These processes are important to all children, in particular to children with special needs. A child on the autistic spectrum can improve his or her communication with his friends by engaging in a physically active game. A child with Cerebral Palsy will improve his or her flexibility and coordination through physical activities. Physical education classes are currently carried out in a small sports room with only partial equipment or on an open sports field which is located in the school yard. This set up does not make it possible to fully achieve the goals for inclusion of students with special needs in this arena. In order to continue to develop inclusion and the important skills described above, we need to build a modern sports hall with all the necessary equipment to serve a broad range of students of different ages and skill levels. It is clear to us that physical education is an integral part of educating and raising children without special needs as well as a means of promoting the development of children with special needs. Most of all, physical education serves as a platform and a perfect opportunity for an encounter which combines mutual giving and receiving between children with and without special needs.
