Excited to open the yearly fundraising day, organized jointly by Alut, The Israeli Society for Children and Adults with Autism and the Association for Children at Risk (Autism Treatment and Research Center), which will take place on Monday, January 4, 2021, 20 Tevet 5771. This fundraising campaign is encouraged by the Ministry of Education. It is designed to expose students to Autism, teach them to recognize the disability, accept it, and be part of a more inclusive and just society. This initiative will be accompanied by an awareness campaign for students, teachers, and the general public. We call on the public to raise funds for Autism awareness and services so that, together, we’re building a more inclusive society. Background: Over 30,000 individuals in Israel have been diagnosed with autism, and statistics show that the numbers will continue to grow. Autism is a neurological developmental disorder typically resulting in difficulties in social interactions (verbal and non-verbal communication) and very limited and repetitive behaviors and interests. The term "Autism Spectrum Disorder" indicates that even though all people with Autism have a range of difficulties in the areas of communication, friendship, imagination or flexibility of thought – each one is in a different place on the spectrum, and no two people with Autism are identical. Some people on the spectrum can live an independent life, while others will need assistance their whole life. Autism is a lifelong disorder and is a difficult disorder to treat. Since it affects the ability to communicate with the child and establish a relationship, and since children with autism often cannot imitate even the simplest social behavior, it requires extraordinary patience, professionalism and time to teach them even the simplest skills.
