In Israel today, under Israeli law, a Jewish woman cannot get divorced without the approval of her husband, or a “gett”. Her husband can extort or blackmail her to pay him money, demand she surrender rights to property, to her children, or simply refuse to release her. She is then trapped – an “agunah” or “mesorevet gett”: she can never remarry and any children she might have with another man are considered mamzerim and forbidden to ever marry other Jews. This is the reality for 1 in 5 women who get divorced in Israel today. Thousands of women in Israel are trapped because their husbands refuse to grant them a divorce or gett. Many more pay for their freedom. This can happen to anyone, and happens to women we all know. No matter how you get married, there is only one way to get divorced – through the religious courts. At Mavoi Satum, we believe that every woman should be free to leave her marriage without permission, without penalty and without payment. Change is possible. There are halachic solutions.
