Teaching Democracy and Peace for our Shared Future

The State of Israel is enduring crises in the political, defense and social arenas, with deleterious effects only amplified by the pandemic. Social crises fuel increased polarization and social division, heightened tension between Jews and Arabs, violence, and personal and economic insecurity. This storm of crises befalling us requires an educational response. The Adam Institute for Democracy and Peace was founded in 1987 to teach democracy and peace, and foster a worldview that respects human rights and civil rights. It was established in memory of Emil Grunzweig, a teacher and researcher from Jerusalem, who was killed in a demonstration against the Lebanon war on February 10, 1983. The Adam Institute has the tools and professional knowledge to address the current strife. Since its establishment, more than 350,000 children, teens and adults, Jews and Arabs, have participated in Adam Institute courses and programs. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to spearhead democracy education for all ages, communities and sectors. Our programs are crucial for these tenuous times; they foster an environment of democratic and respectful dialogue that allows polarized groups to connect. They provide tools for dealing with conflict through peaceful methods of conflict resolution. Yet steep cuts in support for teaching democracy and peace have resulted in a lack of resources to implement these vital programs—just when they’re needed most.
