Amit (meaning “friend” in Hebrew), as his name states, was a good friend who always spread joy and love among his friends and family. What set Amit apart from the crowd was that he accepted everything with love, with ease and humor, and always knew how to fall and rise like a great man. He could look at hardship in the eye and know that tomorrow would be a new day. As an outstanding athlete who aspired to excellence, he dreamed of being an outstanding soldier, but it wasn't enough for him- he became a hero soldier.
From the day of Amit’s passing on May 12, 2020, I tracked back his footsteps. Through his posts, photos, videos and greetings, I realized that Amit’s clear message was that to continue living and spreading good into the world. And just as Amit spread good, light and joy during his lifetime, so too, in spirit he spreads light and good everywhere, and thus motivates me to continue to choose life, growth and continuity. I am glad that we are given the opportunity to build a synagogue and a community center through which Amit’s spirit will continue spreading light and goodness together with all the people of Israel.
What is special about the synagogue and the community center is that it will be built in the city of Sderot. A city of Amit’s roots. As a child, grandson, nephew and uncle Amit visited his family - one of the founding families of the city - and especially Grandpa Jacob and Grandma Hannah. He would go with them to the synagogue to pray, honor and thank them for a long tradition. In one of his posts Amit wrote, 'I am proud to be a Jew, proud to be an Israeli, proud to be the son of amazing parents', which shows a deep connection to his roots and love of the country. Amit promised to tell and not to forget the heritage of the Jewish people, and I ask that you remember Amit.
Amit loved the phrase 'Once a Golanchik (a fighter in the legendary Golani Brigade) there is no turning back because you realize that there is an entire country depending on you'.
I believe that building a house of worship and a community center is a promise and a look to a good future, to the continuity of tradition and unity. Amit was right to defend an entire country with his body, and today he defends an entire country with his spirit.
Amit gift to the people of Israel and the State of Israel is the opportunity to be part of building and spreading good, to fight for unity, a good life and for complete redemption of the entire people of Israel, Amen.
