The Movement for Governability and Democracy - Meshilut

The Movement for Governability and Democracy (Meshilut) is a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization founded in January 2013 to strengthen the rule of Israel’s elected officials by restoring the proper balance between the legal and executive branches of government. Meshilut maintains that judicial activism by members of Israel's Supreme Court and the judicial system at large, e.g., the Office of the Attorney General and Legal Advisory, undermines the rule of law, damages public trust in government and all its branches and ultimately hurts governability and democracy.The Movement for Governability and DemocracyStrengthening Israel’s Rule of DemocracyMeshilut confronts daily the abuses, misuses and failures of Israel’s legal system by means of: Monitoring and Legal Action: Meshilut monitors and audits Israel's legal system though the submission of enquiries, filing of complaints (when necessary), bringing Meshiut's findings to the public through the various media. Research and Reports: Working papers issued by Meshilut have gained wide acceptance in academia, positively influence developments in the Knesset, and receive extensive coverage in Israel’s mass media outlets. Public Engagement: Through seminars, publications, legal forums, guild meetings, educational activities, Meshilut’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages, Meshilut connects with thousands of its supporters providing updates on activities and answering inquiries with the aim of creating a fruitful discourse in the fields of governability and democracy. Legislation: Providing Knesset members from all parties with the tools they need in drafting legislation and government resolutions aimed to solve the abuses and failures of Israel's legal system, and, system of governance. Parliamentary Activity: Working with Knesset members from all parties, Meshilut is able to successfully amplify its agenda inside the various Knesset committees. Petitioning the High Court: Although Meshilut is against excessive court intervention in affairs of state, to help rein in Israel’s hyper-activist attorney general, Meshilut petitions The High Court. To date, all appeals filed have brought positive change.
