We are fortunate to be living at a time when the children of Israel have returned to our land. The Zionist movement was a revolutionary endeavor that achieved the ingathering of our exiles, the cultivation of our soil, the revival of our language, and the attainment of political independence. As a movement focused on the Jewish people’s material rebuilding, Zionism was highly successful. It transformed the children of Israel - the legendary characters from Scripture - from gas to solid form. And it constructed the physical vessel meant to house a giant spirit destined to lead humanity towards a brighter future. But once Israel returned to Jerusalem in 1967, we entered a new historic era in which we must focus on the spiritual content that will drive and animate the State of Israel. This new stage requires us to catch up psychologically to the many material achievements attained through Zionism so we can successfully create a just and holy society that will inspire humanity. Today it is crucial that we build a new movement that will not only formulate a vision for Israel and the world but also successfully overcome the obstacles to that vision. We need to build a movement that will heal the internal rifts in our society, inspire our youth towards active participation in our national mission, manage healthy relations with our neighbors, help Israel take its rightful place on the international stage, and communicate the prophetic message we are meant to share with humanity from Jerusalem. Recognizing the need for a path forward, Rav Oury Cherki has created the New Direction/Brit-Olam movement to advance Israel’s revolution to the next stage.
