Itach Ma’aki – Women Lawyers for Social Justice strives to end gender-based discrimination in Israel, especially against women from communities that are socio-economically, geographically, and ethnically marginalized. In Israel, a country in which women are making 62% of what men make on average, where 5.5% of mayors and less than 25% of legislators are women, where women from minority groups such as Arab, Bedouin, haredi, and immigrant women are virtually unrepresented in political and economic leadership, where political and security negotiations take place without a single woman around the table, the need to bring women’s voices and leadership to the fore is absolutely critical. Women’s basic rights and needs are at risk in Israel. And without women’s inclusion in decision-making at the helm, women’s rights will continue to be trampled on. Itach-Ma'aki protects the rights of women from all communities in Israel through a dynamic strategy of direct legal assistance, legislative and judicial advocacy, and pioneering programs for women’s inclusion and leadership that tackle the root causes of gender inequality and discrimination.
