Beit Haknesset HaRamban (the Ramban Synagogue) is situated in the Katamon neighborhood of south Jerusalem. It is a Religious-Zionist place of worship and center of Torah study. It combines faithfulness to the traditions of its founders with a contemporary approach to the revitalization of prayer and Torah. The synagogue was founded in the early 1950s, and since the 1960s has been situated in its current location on Amatziah Street in Jerusalem. The late Rabbi Dov Eliezarov served as its first spiritual leader, followed by Rabbi Benny Lau, who led the congregation together with Rabbanit Carmit Feintuch. Since 2020 Rabbi Itiel Oron serves as the spiritual leader of the congregation.
The vision of the State of Israel as the “beginning of the flowering of our redemption” is a central leitmotif of the Raman Synagogue: holocaust survivors pray side by side with the children of Jerusalem; native Israelis with new and veteran immigrants. At the entrance to the synagogue building there is a memorial wall recognizing members of the congregation who gave their lives for the State, and Yom Ha’atzmaut and Yom Yerushalaim are celebrated with special festive prayers involving hundreds of participants.
In addition to being a place of worship, the Ramban synagogue is a vibrant, active place of Torah, with classes and sheurim taking place every day of the week. Learning in Ramban is a very significant part of its function. It is varied and diverse. Sessions devoted to Bible study, Halacha, Jewish philosophy and Talmud, along with book launches, seminars and panel discussions on current communal issues take place regularly.
The Ramban congregation is proud of its support for and encouragement of Torah study for women. Women are an integral part of our educational program, as leaders of study sessions and sermon presenters.
In addition to being a place of prayer and learning, Ramban is a center of benevolence and charity. In close cooperation with the Jerusalem Municipal Welfare Office, the synagogue’s charity fund supports many residents of our Katamon neighborhood in need of financial assistance and succor.
For over seventy years, the Ramban Synagogue has served the spiritual needs of the residents of the Katamon and surrounding neighborhoods. The Ramban Synagogue provides a friendly and open environment and warmly welcomes worshippers of all ages and backgrounds.
