Our Six Million is an organization that has been operating since 2013 to instill remembrance of the Holocaust and its events in future generations, by establishing a tradition to light a personal memorial candle in every Jewish home on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day. (Similar, in a very different way, to the Chanukiya that we light on Chanukah or the Haggadah we read on Passover.) We believe that holding a family ceremony will ensure that the memory of the Holocaust is preserved in future generations. Every candle from Our Six Million features the name and personal details about a person who perished in the Holocaust, as well as a QR code that connects to additional information about the person. Dedicating the candle to the memory of a specific person and hearing some of their life story creates a deep and meaningful connection. Since the beginning of our operations, over 5,000,000 personal memorial candles have been lit in Israel and all over the world. The organization was founded with the belief that each and every member of the future generation is personally responsible for commemorating the Holocaust in an active manner. This becomes especially important as the number of Holocaust survivors who are still with us today declines. Objectives: • Preservation and commemoration of the events of the Holocaust for future generations. • Establishment and implementation of a national commemoration tradition of lighting a personal memorial candle. • Reviving the personal identities of Jews who perished. • Personal remembrance in addition to collective commemoration. • Learning and remembering the Holocaust in an operative manner in order to build a better future. • Reinforcing a sense of nationality and identity through an act of commemoration, learning, and understanding of the events that occurred during the Holocaust.
