HOW – Project Description
The Or Babayit [“Light in the Home”] project was launched by Or Lekhol Bayit Beyisrael, a not-for-profit group aimed at disseminating Jewish values in a range of ways, including offering to affix a mezuza for free to any Jewish home that would like one.
The project entails a “yeshiva bocher” [a young man studying in a yeshiva] arriving at the family home and guiding the head of the family as he affixes the mezuza to the doorpost, while explaining its significance in Judaism. The warm and meaningful ceremony ends
with the presentation of an attractive copy of the Book of Psalms as well.
To date, more than 21,000 families have participated in the project, and demand is rising. Currently, it is continuing at a rate of about 300 mezuzot per month, half in the center of the country and half in the periphery. Twelve yeshiva students, in different areas of the country, personally reach the participating families and conduct the ceremony.
The main aim of the project is to encourage Jewish tradition and the protection of the
People of Israel by upholding the age-old mitzva of having a “kosher” mezuza attached to the doorpost at the entrance to the home, thereby declaring with pride, “Here lives a Jewish family!”
This project is aimed all Jewish homes throughout Israel – families, single people, the
elderly, the orthodox, the secular, the wealthy, the poor – all are welcome to participate.
The values imbued in this project are: sanctity, Judaism, family, unity, belonging,
amity, tradit
