Avukat Or was founded by the parents of adults (over the age of 21), dealing with a combination of disabilities: blindness, developmental and physical disabilities, and communication deficits. It was founded in 2004, settings its sights on developing a unique service in Israel: a therapeutic Day Care Rehabilitation Center that will provide adequate and fitted service to each specific disability.
After 12 years of activity in the day center, during which the number of participants rose exponentially, Avukat -Or started operating its Community housing as well.
The Day Center gives content and meaning to our participants, providing them with therapeutic activities tailored to their individual abilities in different rehabilitative classes: drama, art, music, movement, cooking, gardening and any activity that emphasizes integrating several sensory experiences together and providing cognitive stimulation.
Our activities in the day center create a meaningful social environment by working in small groups. A lot of thought went into the staff make up and the meaningful integration of the community in the day center.
Our assisted-living facilities consists of 5 community apartments. In each apartment there is a crew of rehabilitation instructors that accompany the tenants throughout both day and night, and create together a rich and warm living environment, which include day-to-day household maintenance, diversified clubs, trips, tours and more. We see each apartment as a “home for life” for each resident, in which he will experience peace and security. We hold in high regard living in respectable apartment, accessible and well-accessorized.
Avukat -Or’s day center resides in a structure comprised of several rented apartments in Kiryat Moshe, a neighborhood in Jerusalem, which are not properly accessible to our mentees. Despite the rough terrain we implement the goals for which the center was created: creating a safe space for content-rich creative activities in a warm familiar environment inside the community. Unfortunately, we must decline many requests made by potential mentees who wish to join the day center, due to the center’s crowdedness and low capacity. Our dream is to build a new location for the day center, which will allow us to provide our unique service to anyone who so aspires. We invite you to become our partners in this momentous project and help us realize our dream.
