Gav LaLochem
Gav LaLochem (support for the combat soldier) is an NGO for male and female IDF combat soldiers who have completed full military service. It was set up particularly to help soldiers from weak to medium socio-economic backgrounds and aims to accompany, mentor and counsel these young men and women as they embark on their civilian adult life.
The founders of the NGO are combat soldiers and officers themselves, who found the challenges of civilian life quite daunting upon completing their own service. There were so many options and opportunities, bureaucracy and obstacles, and no-one to guide them. They felt helpless.
They didn't let it get them down though. They vowed to do something about it, and give back to the soldiers who had given so much of themselves to the country.
Program Description:
Course: 20 sessions covering a wide range of practical and emotion-oriented topics, with the aim of sharing life tools for goal-setting and decision-making and developing a quality group of young adults.
The sessions generally take place weekly at the Young People's Center, with a few held in other locations.
Individual sessions: The facilitator opens the session, a prominent professional guest speaker provides relevant content and the facilitator offers a summary. Some sessions are led and run entirely by the facilitator. Most of our lecturers are familiar with the format and the aims of the course and have developed unique content for Gav LaLochem groups.
Mentors: After about two months into the program, each participant is matched with a personal mentor, who accompanies him or her for approximately 10 months. The mentor is suited to the needs and style of the participant and they meet at least once every two weeks for a couple of hours.
Social Initiatives: Because we are intimately aware of our soldiers' mental capabilities and ethical standards, we are able to create a high-quality and influential community.
The functioning of our program costs us approximately One hundred and fifteen thousand shekels a year ($35,000). This includes everything: All the professional courses, the personal mentor, a scholarship that will help them realize the project, and a hot meal at every meeting.
We need your help to continue doing our important work!. We have two courses due to start this June- Petah Tikva and Jerusalem.
If you value our work, please consider donating.
