"Roof to the Demobilized Soldier" was established with the goal of giving soldiers, lacking economic means, the opportunity to acquire high level education. The way the organization does that is by supplying students with cheap accommodation, as well as other financial help as is deemed necessary, which are financed entirely through donations. The organization was established in Haifa, Israel, in 1982. It has helped thousands of demobilized soldiers with affordable housing which allowed them to cope with the heavy financial burden of living and studying in a big city. The organization does not receive any help from governmental or municipal authorities, and its activities are made possible only through the donations of private people and funds. Almost all the workers in the organization are volunteers, who invest considerable time and energy for the success of this important project. The organization's tenants come from low social and economic status, and possess a strong motivation for studying and success. During their studying, they live in apartments in Haifa, which the organization rents for them. Every year, those who graduated leave the apartments, equipped with a high education degree, and new students take their place. The requirements for getting accepted by the organization are: Full military term or other national service Enrollment in a higher education facility Low social and economic status The uniqueness of the organization is in its combination of assisting in both housing and education, so that it provides not only a place to live but also financial backing for the students.
