About 476,000 elderly people over the age of 75 live in Israel. Over 200,000 of them are reported to be suffering from loneliness. 8:00 in the morning the alarm clock rings. He wears his favorite tie, spreads the checkered tablecloth on the table, and waits. Will they arrive? We must not close our eyes. Not only those without families experience this problem. Having a family does not necessarily mean they aren't lonely. Sitting for long hours alone on the couch, waiting in anticipation for the phone to ring and someone to talk to and share with. Loneliness is looking at the door waiting for someone to come in and alleviate that longing. Loneliness can occur at all times: When the grandson wraps up the visit and returns to the army. When the daughter hangs up the daily phone call. When the neighbor from the apartment opposite returns to his house. They stay alone. In the empty house. We are here for them. In 2020, at the height of the Coronavirus, Tal Harel, then a 21-year-old girl, founded the "Surprise Cake" association, a non-profit organization, out of desire to alleviate the loneliness and social distancing imposed on everyone and the elderly in particular. In the past three years, around the holidays (Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, Pesach, Shavuot) 3,000 volunteers of all kinds have come out. The non-profit, which operates in about 15 different cities, serves over 3000 elderly. They bake a cake pay a visit to their elderly person. We fulfill the elderly with a sense of friendship and meaning, and they look forward to it every new holiday. The cake is just an excuse. The cake is the means of creating the connection. It gives us an opportunity to visit and assuage the loneliness of the dear people who live among us. According to research data from the American Geriatrics Association, lonely people have a 30% higher risk of stroke, brain and heart disease, and 40% more risk of getting dementia! With each passing holiday, the elderly want us to visit them more, not only on holidays. Loneliness is the epidemic of old age. We want to increase the number of visits to once a week for the elderly. For all our dreams to come true for the elderly, we are doing a crowdfunding campaign. No one want to feel lonely. One cake can change a life.
