When the shelter in place sirens blare, that is all the time Israeli’s have to run into their bomb shelters or safe rooms to protect them from incoming rockets, grenades or other threats to life and limb. But for many students whose schools have now become death traps, the only way they can learn is by continuing their classes in the bomb shelters. And it is not ideal, to say the least!
Unlike many Israeli towns and cities in the center and south, northern towns, like Kfar Vradim in Western Galilee, 9 KM from the hostile Lebanon border , still have not resumed regular school days. Elementary school sessions mostly take place on Zoom and a few hours every week held in a nearby bomb shelter.
Mrs. Meirav Levkovich, an elementary school principal said, “In order to be able to learn in school in Kfar Vradim (which is quite close to the border) we must stay in the shelters twenty-four seven. The lessons take place there but it is very hard on both the teachers and students. It is stressful not knowing when the next missile will strike and it is very hard to teach and learn under these very tough conditions,” she said.
Because of these restrictions, the children are not learning in their regular classrooms. And the bomb shelters, turned into makeshift classrooms, are lacking in educational tools and equipment that are essential for learning.
We hope the elementary school children in Western Galilee can resume life as normal sooner than later. In the meantime, to enable a successful learning environment, with the constant threat of rocket attacks, the school principal identified much needed technology tools to enhance their altered learning experience.
The principal and teachers agree that they would greatly benefit from televisions in each shelter, a refrigerator to store food, and heaters for the upcoming cold winter.
Here are the costs for the above objects and how you can help.
1. Television sets 2100 ILS (including tax)—they need four
2. A heater—150 ILS (including tax)—they need seven
3. A refrigerator—2200 ILS (including tax)
Total request 11,650 NIS = about $3,165
Here is how you can help by donating to the “Galila for a Better Future Foundation.”
