Israeli Torah - Lechatchila

We can no longer postpone, nor can we pass this challenge on to the next generation. The people of Israel must connect to their roots and, from them, create their own Torah, a Torah that speaks to and with them, a Torah for the generation of triumph and the generations that it will bring forth. 'L'katchila' 'L'katchila' seeks to respond to the challenge that has been before us since the return to Zion, to lay the foundations for the Israeli dimension of the Torah, for the dimension of our generations. A Torah that will cease to be a matter of a particular sector; a Torah that will cease to be a matter of obligation to the past - and will begin to be a matter of the present and the future as well. A Torah that will express, as befits the Land of Israel, new balances between body and soul, between spirituality and earthliness, between the sacred and the secular. We believe that the time has come for renewal in the Torah - with the aim of returning the people of Israel to the Torah and the Torah to the people of Israel. This is a tremendous challenge, and we hope to lay its first foundations. To begin. In practice, our work at 'L'katchila' will be based on holding lectures and content for the general public, initiating conferences and debates to discuss fundamental halakhic questions, and publishing works that will begin to outline the contours of the Judaism of our generations. At 'L'katchila,' we are developing innovation within and from tradition, while connecting to the powerful network that has empowered us for so many generations. A connection that involves daring, as it entails taking responsibility and authority; a connection that involves humility, as it is based on accepting the tradition of the generations as a foundation and striving for a renewed formulation of Jewish commitment in our time.
