There are friendships that start in childhood, some that start in school, and others from military service or from the office. And then there are friendships that start with a shared passion – like running!
Our friendship began as we ran against the cold wind up and down the hills of Jerusalem. Together we shared many miles, knee pain, but more importantly we shared a (far-fetched) dream that one day we would run an entire marathon together.
A year before Ayala and Ahava met, Ayala, who was 16 an in 11th grade, was suddenly diagnosed with a rare illness and needed to fight for her life. She told herself that the only way to win this battle was to set a goal for which she was willing to fight. So between treatments and a transplant, she set a goal: to run a marathon. She even told the doctors daily that they will join her when she does. While her mind was telling her that running a marathon seemed impossible, her heart knew that no obstacle, not even a life-threatening illness, would stop her from fulfilling it. And before she knew it, Ayala emerged after a year of hospitalization, and she began to run. This was her sign of recovery and a huge gift of life.
At the same time, Ahava was a high school student living in Paris who couldn’t run more than a mile. Her family even joked that she was so bad athletically that her final grade in sports class would lower her overall high school average. But then after school Ahava followed her own values and immigrated to Israel to serve in the IDF. Her love of Israel motivated her towards a greater sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. Then, after having moved to Jerusalem, she began to run.
And this is when the path of Ahava and Ayala intersected.
Ayala and Ahava met in Midreshet Lindenbaum, a pre-military program in Jerusalem for religious girls. Together they ran. Ayala ran after life and Ahava ran for a greater purpose. After 5 years, they are ready.:
o In 2017, a dream was born - we ran 10 km through the streets of Jerusalem
o In 2020 while serving in the IDF we both ran the Tel Aviv Half Marathon.
o In 2022, with G-ds help, we will fly to the finish line as we run the full NYC Marathon!
This is where we need your Help. We have decided to wrap our own dreams with another layer of meaning and joined a much broader and significant project.
We have committed to raising money for the thousands of families who benefit from Shalva's services on a daily basis.
The New York City Marathon is the biggest marathon in the world and getting a ticket is almost impossible. This is the first year that Team Shalva will be running in the NYC marathon. Together we will lead the first ever running group from Israel, running with Israeli pride for a greater purpose.
On 6th of November, we will be your representatives. We will run together with thousands of people, as a symbol of life and purpose.
You could make a big impact with just a small amount.
Each donation is 100% tax deductible.
We thank you in advance for your donation and in making this dream a reality.
