We need your help to keep this mission alive and honor Rachel’s memory

Donors: 100

Ten years ago, the Simon family and Rachel’s dearest friends embarked on this journey to find a spiritual home for the memory of our beautiful Rachel. A lifelong artist, Rachel performed on this very stage 30 years ago as a student at the Rothberg School at Hebrew University. Now her artwork adorns the lobby that bears her name, welcoming new generations of students. The Rachel Simon Hillel Theater in Beit Hillel at Hebrew University: $500k raised and two major renovations have given us the Rachel Simon Hillel Theater. Now a state-of-the-art theater, over eight Broadway shows have been performed since its 2014 dedication including Hello Dolly, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie and most recently, Oliver. The theater is used to host orientations for Birthright Israel as well as educational programs across many faiths and backgrounds. A Modern Home for Creativity and Education: Used annually by over 6,000 students for performances, lectures, artistic and social activities, this theater is one of the most active vehicles of expression for young and talented American and International students in Israel. Home to the Beit Hillel Theater Workshop, past renovations have included a new stage, advanced lighting and sound, acoustically designed walls and ceiling, brand new dressing rooms and bathrooms and a Roland piano The “Jewel” of Hebrew University: Eight years of highly attended performances, rehearsals, lectures and orientations have taken its toll on our beloved theater. Because of its popularity, we must embark on another renovation and have chosen to upgrade some outdated features while making the theater more environment and accessible friendly. Two phases of a $200k renovation will include installation of modern-day, durable flooring, repainting, retrofitting and upgrading of electrical and other equipment. With $75k raised to date through crowdfunding and foundation fundraising, Phase 1 is nearly complete. Phase 2 seeks $125k to provide new and comfortable seating, many with foldable writing tablets, all electrically wired with outlets for charging and using devices. Updated LED lighting throughout will be both climate and cost effective. Wheelchair seating platforms and railings will be installed as well as augmented lighting along the aisles and stairs fulfilling a long overdue improvement for accessibility. We feel privileged to be a part of creating this beautiful and beloved home for art, culture and learning. But we need your help to keep this mission alive and honor Rachel’s memory.
