A Second Opportunity for Equality We all want to live in a shared society in which the basis is equality. However in our society there are women who face multiple economic, social and gender barriers. The time has come for these women to overcome these obstacles - with your help. The best way to decrease social gaps is through education and particularly for women. The “Second Opportunity” program that is led by Mahapach-Taghir non-profit organization, enables Arab women, even in older ages to study for a B.A. degree in the university. Moreover, it provides an opportunity for women to change the course of their lives and the lives of their family members - to feel equal, capable, stronger and to become leaders in their communities. 50 women have already graduated with a B.A. degree and currently 75 women in three groups in Baqa Al Gharbiya, Yafia and Jaffa are in the midst of studying in the university. In order to graduate - they need your support! We believe that education is a right and is the best way to advance equality between different groups in our society. Education is also very important in decreasing violence and crime, it is the basis for personal and societal growth and for developing women's leadership who are taking responsibility and promoting social change. An opportunity for equality Mona has graduated with honors and already started her M.A. degree; Layla became a well known activist in her town; Jihan found a job for the first time in her life, a job that improved her family`s standard of living; two of Samah`s children followed her footsteps and started studying in the university; Nijma`s husband was inspired by her and went to college. Until not long ago, these women would not have been able to believe how much their lives have changed. However they are all part of groups of women whose lives are transformed since they joined the “Second Opportunity” program. Their success demonstrates how powerful women are as individuals and in a group in overcoming challenges and becoming examples for others for the next generation and for the entire society. But they can not do it without our support. The “Second Opportunity” program allows each group of women to study together, as a group, in the “Open University”in their town, close to home. The women study together and support each other. They also receive close support from Mahapach-Taghir`s local program coordinators. Operating a complex program such as the “Second Opportunity” program requires resources to cover the tuition fees for the university for all the women students and to accompany them all along the journey, which is critical for the proven success of the program. The “Open university”, local municipalities and philanthropic foundations support the program, but that is not enough for the program to continue. Last year more than 700 Arab and Jews contributed through our crowdfunding campaign and ensured another year of studies for the women. However the academic degree is spread over 4-5 years and there is a need for additional support so the participants to graduate. We believe this is the way for a better future for our society. Millions of people in Israel have been demonstrating in the past months in support of democratic values.
