Almost 10 years ago, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to volunteer at one of Israel’s greatest organizations, Save a Child’s Heart. Save a Child's Heart (SACH) is an Israeli humanitarian organization providing cardiac healthcare to children worldwide. The organization enables children from around the world to live a healthier and more productive life by providing surgery that would otherwise be unobtainable. I would come in every morning to the children’s home to 10s of smiling kids from all around the world, all different ages, with different backgrounds, and speaking different languages, but still managing to get along and play with each other. One of the most memorable experiences was the lunchtime routine. A few of the children’s mothers had come to live at the recovery home with the children, to help out with the kids, and help with cooking the meals. Around noon, the mothers (mainly from African countries) would turn up their African dance music and all the kids and volunteers would would come out in a circle and dance their traditional dance. It was such a beautiful experience to see the sharing of cultures, and the amount of joy in one room full of kids who are being given another chance at life. Christian, Muslim, Jewish, the organization doesn’t care about your color, race, or religion. I was most proud when I heard that most of the children that are being taken care of are Palestinian kids who do not have access to proper health care. Save a Child’s Heart encompasses all of the things that I love most about Israel. As a country, we train our people to be the best in their field, and then go out and help others using our knowledge and expertise. On March 19th, I will be running my first marathon. I decided to take on this challenge for many reasons, but I was able to take it on because I was blessed with a healthy heart. That is why I have decided to fundraise for this specific cause. Every 24 hours, save a child’s heart saves a life. I want one more kid to be able to go out and run.
