On the last Israeli Cinema Day in 2024, 29 feature films were screened, and only 4 were directed by women – a mere 17%. The underrepresentation of women in Israeli cinema affects us all. "We can't be what we can't see." We, our daughters, and our girls need to see themselves on screen and feel that they have a place and can be anything. When 50% of the population is not represented equally, reality shifts accordingly.
Take a moment to think about how much of who you are today is influenced by your environment, and who were the significant figures in your life. Now, imagine how amazing it would be for your daughters, sisters, and mothers to be appreciated and see themselves on screen. They can see strong, powerful female characters and imagine this is who they will be when they grow up.
Women In The Frame was established in 2004 and has since operated with the vision of increasing the representation of women on screen and influencing our reality
Women In The Frame is a nationwide social organization with three main initiatives:
1. **The Jerusalem International Women's Film Festival**: The only festival in Israel for women's films is our flagship project. The festival presents over 70 films from Israel and worldwide, all directed by women every year. The festival brings a fresh, bold, significant perspective, and diverse voices, and for four days, we celebrate women's cinema, about women, and for everyone!
2. **"Talking Films" - Film Screenings for Women Victims of Violence in Shelters**: Women In The Frame is the only organization that screens films for women victims of violence in shelters. These screenings have significant therapeutic power, helping those women who are in the cycle of violence to return to the community. The power of cinema can penetrate the subconscious and heal things that do not surface in therapy rooms.
3. **Film Screenings for Displaced People Due to the War**: Recently, the organization has redirected its resources to screen films for adults and children in hotels for evacuees from the south and north.
Additionally, the organization holds various events and initiatives throughout the year.
We invite you to join us and support this effort for women's equality in cinema and society.
