Although the exact figures are incomplete, it is estimated that more than 440,000 children and youth in Israel are defined as being at extreme risk. Two years of ongoing war have left a deep and lasting impact on the youth. Research by the State Comptroller shows a sharp rise in youth arrests and involvement in risky or criminal behaviors, directly linked to the war. Currently, only a small fraction of them are placed within structured frameworks.
The Nirim organization was founded in 2003 in memory of Israeli “Navy Seals” Sergeant Major Nir Krichman z"l, who was killed in action in 2002. Since its founding in 2003, Nirim has initiated and operates a unique nationwide therapeutic education program. Every year, Nirim gives hundreds of high-risk teens, aged 14-18, another opportunity, sometimes their last, to overcome their challenging life circumstances, discover their strengths, and return to society as citizens who contribute to themselves, their families, and the country. Through a unique combination of education, wilderness therapy and extensive individual therapeutic support, we enable these youths to set and achieve high standards in personal development, academic excellence, and meaningful contribution to society. The organization’s impact is demonstrated by its exceptional outcomes: over 90% of graduates earn a full matriculation certificate, and more than 95% proceed to significant service.
