Founded in 2016 in Israel’s Northern Jezreel Valley, Kaima Nahalal, a non-profit educational farm, improves opportunities and choices for troubled youth and young adults, and brings together the larger community in the process. Using the farm as our classroom and nature as our teacher, Kaima fosters a sense of personal agency and value for youth (ages 15-18) and young adults (ages 18-21) unable to relate to conventional educational, social, and national service settings. Participants include those who may have dropped out of school, are suffering addiction, sexual abuse/trauma, dangerously poor self-esteem, and are particularly vulnerable after leaving ultra-orthodox communities, among other challenges. Kaima Nahalal was initially founded as the first all-girl/woman-run farm in the growing Kaima social farming network. In 2024, in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War, we began to integrate boys into our farming community and are working with Israel’s welfare authorities to absorb more young people into our programming.
