House of Wheels (Beit Hagalgalim in Hebrew) is an Israeli nonprofit organization founded in 1979 to provide solutions for after-school and weekend hours for children with physical disabilities. Today it serves over 470 children, youth and young adults challenged with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and other debilitating illnesses. The organization operates six regional branches serving all geographic areas and sectors of Israeli society. In 2016 we opened weekend groups for the ultra orthodox community. We operate three groups for girls and young women ages 10-21 and plans to expand our activities in the future.
House of Wheels is the only organization in Israel that works intensively with the same participants over such a long period of time, assisting them through different stages of their development -- from childhood through adolescence and on to adulthood.
Our professional staff and 450 volunteers, offers a warm, supportive environment that challenges the participants to push their limits and overcome their physical limitations.
We strive to provide:
* Acquisition of social skills
* Respite for family members from their ongoing caretaking (which can delay or prevent the need for out-of-home placement)
* Assistance in job placement
* Pro-active solidarity among volunteers, professionals and families
* Regular social outlet for those who lack alternative options
* A change in society’s attitude towards people with disabilities
* Guidance and support in accessing services and cultural opportunities in home communities
* Maximal integration of people with disabilities into the community
Our Programs
Weekends: Each weekend, 80 participants and an equal number of volunteers enjoy a full weekend of activities, including a sleepover, in the Shabbat spirit.
Weekly Clubs: Each of the 6 branches runs over 30 clubs for children and youth with physical disabilities including: art, music, journalism, computers, cooking, dog training, etc.
Summer Camps: Each summer, we provide 5 consecutive days of sleepover camp including activities such as kayaking, hiking, volunteering and more.
Youth & Young Adults: We provide tools for independent living for youth aged 14-18 and young adults aged 19+, including life skills, personal growth and self-confidence, preparation for leaving home, leisure activities, etc.
Rolling Experience: This unique social enterprise created and run by graduates of House of Wheels provides the opportunity for able-bodied people to experience a couple of hours in the life of someone with physical disabilities.
