Jerusalem Food Rescuers - Food Security for All

Expanding the Food Security Network During The War

Donors: 452

The Problem The war has exacerbated many social problems in Jerusalem and is the cause of a significant increase in food insecurity for a growing number of Jerusalem's residents – 40% of whom already live below the poverty line. For them, food insecurity is a daily challenge that involves agonizing tradeoffs in order to ensure that their families have enough to eat. Due to the security situation, these problems are magnified as the cost of food has significantly risen while incomes have stagnated or have dropped. We know of people who have lost their jobs and in some cases are afraid to leave their homes to go to work. People displaced because of the war are living in temporary housing far from their places of employment, and many have lost their livelihoods altogether as a result of the war.  The Solution Tens of tons of edible food are discarded every day at Jerusalem’s wholesale market. This is perfectly edible and healthy food which can be salvaged and distributed to those in need. Large scale food rescue is a simple and effective way to address the challenge of food insecurity in Jerusalem.  With your help, the Food Rescuers can expand the food rescue network in Jerusalem so that we can triple our rescuing capacity and provide fresh produce each week to thousands of marginalized Jerusalemites and evacuees from the war temporarily living in the city.   Your donation will help us: • TRIPLE our efforts so that we can rescue 9 tons of food per week. • Deliver much-needed food through more than 20 neighborhood markets and distributions points. • Create 1,080 volunteer opportunities per month. • Set up the physical infrastructure and volunteer network that will remain in place for the years to come.  About us  Since 2019, Food Rescuers has worked to develop models for community-based urban food rescue and food security. Our work is centered around rescuing and distributing food as well as creating community projects using surplus food to strengthen food resilience in the city. These projects include educational programs in schools around food systems change as well as a sustainable and social catering business. Our model aims to create a just, decentralized, and sustainable urban food system in Jerusalem.
