Since October 7, hundreds of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities have suffered debilitating PTSD due to extreme traumatic events they experienced during the war. Many of them witnessed horrifying acts of terror, while some lost loved ones. Many endured continuous life-threatening missile barrages exploding around their homes, while others were evacuated, wrenched at a moment’s notice from embracing supportive communities. Most recently, the second Iran war sparked a new wave of trauma, often retriggering and intensifying previous traumas. SHEKEL’s therapeutic centers are now working tirelessly to help victims of war with disabilities overcome paralyzing trauma and rebuild full lives of purpose, hope and fulfilment. The number of PTSD cases is now on the rise and is expected to increase over the next two years. These are emergency cases and immediate therapeutic response is critical.
