Beit Almog Shilony is a lone soldier home in Modiin. We currently run two homes - one for men and one for women. We are opening a third home in January. The first home was opened in 2015, six months after Almog was murdered while returning to his base. He was at the HaHagana train station in Tel Aviv when a terrorist attacked him from behind with a knife. The terrorist attempted to take Almog's weapon to carry out a mass attack at the crowded station. Understanding this, Almog used all his might to withstand the stab wounds and not relinquish his weapon. He lost too much blood and despite life saving efforts he died a hero later that day.
Almog had been serving as a commander in the Nahal Charedi unit where he thought he could make the biggest impact. He was stunned to see how many boys in his unit were considered Lone Soldiers (17 of the 57). Not because they come from abroad but because they are Isreali soldiers who are estranged from their families. He began to bring them home for Shabbat, to help them financially and in many other ways. After his death Almog's parents couldn't turn their backs on these boys and rented a home to continue to provide for Lone Soldiers. In addition to housing and feeding them, Beit Almog provides each soldier with a local host family who has a personal relationship with them, hosts them for Shabbat meals and attends their IDF ceremonies. Once the soldier is discharged, Beit Almog hires private tutors to help them matriculate, apply to university, provide career guidance and counseling, thus giving these Lone Soldiers the best possible chance of success. This home currently houses five Israeli chayalim, most of whom are from charedi backgrounds whose families have rejected them.
As most Americans know there is another kind of Lone Soldier in the IDF. That is the volunteer soldier from abroad. These soldiers have also found a home at Beit Almog. While they have the love and support from their families, they have their own distinct needs that Beit Almog meets. They too have host families, home cooked meals, a house with all the amenities and a community that embraces them. In August 2019 Beit Almog opened a second home for Lone Soldier women from abroad, the first of its kind. This home currently houses five women from New York, South Africa, Panama and Paris.
This January we will open a third home for another five chayalim bodedim. We are currently fundraising to meet the costs of opening and running the home. Our fundraising goal for this project is 750,000 NIS (approximately $200,000).
