Shachar

Shachar is a pre-military program Shahar was founded in 2010 out of a deep belief in the younger generation's ability to influence and shape the future of Israeli society, particularly at the critical juncture of their upcoming intensive military service. We believe that a personalized and successful preparatory experience has a profound impact on their future choices and values throughout life.  The organization operates ten pre-military academies (mechinot) across Israel - from Kibbutz Elrom in the northern Golan Heights, through Mevo Dotan in northern Samaria and Mikveh Israel in Holon, to Nitzan in the south. Each year, Shahar prepares approximately 450 young men and women for meaningful military service, guiding them toward roles that suit their skills and personalities and supporting them throughout their journey. After their service, the organization continues to accompany around 1,800 graduates offering a unique program that helps them emotionally and ethically process their army experience and prepares them for adult life and integration into Israeli society.  The events of October 7 introduced an unprecedented complexity for the State of Israel and brought with them significant emotional challenges, especially for IDF combat soldiers. In response, Shahar expanded its mission to include the critical post-service period, extending beyond its own graduates. The organization now works to help combat units that fought on the southern and northern front in the "Iron Swords" war to find closure, transition from military life not only physically but also mentally, and prevent the long-term impacts of PTSD. Shahar has made it its national mission to strengthen the resilience of discharged combat soldiers, enabling them to reintegrate into Israeli society and continue contributing to the state
