This fourteen year old girl has been putting herself back together for years. "It’s hard to talk about the assault. If the secret is revealed, even years later, the ground will open up beneath me. It feels impossible to talk about what happened, so I'm left alone. In one moment, I dial 1202. I dare to ask for help, to reach out. Suddenly, I could say it out loud: 'They hurt me, I’m in pain.' During these phone calls, in the middle of the night, I’m able to relieve this suffering. 'I am not to blame for being hurt. I am not alone.' Today, I am the one extending my hand out to help. I am not the silent girl; I am the one who makes things happen and works for change. For me, the HRCC is a refuge from a life of hiding. I found myself allies who share their worlds with me, and I share my world with them. I have never felt such a sense of belonging." Every year, the HRCC provides 24/7 services to 7,000 victims and those close to them, as well as programs aimed at preventing future assaults. The HRCC has 80 volunteers. More than 1/3 of them have been victims themselves. Today, they are the ones extending their hands out. Help us continue to provide help, support, and prevention.
