Daniel's Journey

By LEV CHASH

Giving Daniels a chance

Donors: 19

Daniel lives with dystonic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, meaning impairment in all four limbs and significant difficulty controlling his body's muscles. He has trouble sitting, walking, using his hands, and speaking. Daniel relies on a wheelchair, a supported walker, braces, adaptive equipment, and an eye-gaze system that allows him to communicate through his eyes. Daniel has used the eye-gaze system since he was one year old, and it allows him to say words, browse the internet, send WhatsApp messages, and express himself. About a year ago, we learned about an innovative treatment called Cytotron, following the film Loukas' World, which premiered on Netflix. The treatment may encourage the formation of new neural connections in the brain and open up the possibility of improved function and a better quality of life. For Daniel, every small improvement is an entire world. The treatment takes place at a clinic in Bangalore, India, and involves rounds of a month-long treatment, alongside periods of intensive paramedical therapies in Israel to practice, strengthen, and try to realize every new ability that develops.
