Childhood cannot be rewound, but we can save children today. In Israel, thousands of children live in the shadows, invisible to most of society. These children are the sons and daughters of asylum seekers who fled violence and persecution in their home countries. Without legal status, they are denied basic rights and access to the safety nets every child deserves. Although they see Israel as their home, they remain on its margins – with no voice, no security, and no tools to cope with the relentless challenges of their daily lives. At Elifelet, we encounter these children every day. Children wearing clothes that don’t fit and shoes worn thin. Children whose mothers skip meals so there’s food left for them. Many live in places no child should call home – cramped, damp, and unsafe, like the small, decaying storage room that housed a fourth-grade girl and her ailing mother. Despite these challenges, these children laugh, dream, sing, and hope. They embody the resilience of childhood, even under the harshest circumstances. But beneath the surface lies a deeper struggle. Their hardships are not only physical; they carry invisible wounds – anxiety, instability, and a loss of the foundation every child needs to grow and thrive. Safety, opportunity, and hope – what so many of us take for granted – are painfully out of reach for them. We are here to change that. At Elifelet, we provide these children with what they so desperately need: a safe space, emotional support, and guidance. In our after-school programs, over 200 children find sanctuary every day. They learn, play, receive care and therapy, and experience moments of joy and growth.
